Wegmans Lancaster Donates 17,674 Pounds of Food to Two Local Food Pantries During Hunger Action Month

LANCASTER, PA, Sep 05, 2018On Thursday, Sept. 6 at 9 a.m., Wegmans Food Markets will donate a truckload of 17,674 pounds of non-perishable food to Water Street Mission and Lancaster County Council of Churches Food Hub. The donation takes place during Hunger Action Month and just weeks before Wegmans 120,000 square-foot store opens on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Were committed to reducing hunger and giving back to the communities where our customers and employees live and work, said Wegmans Store Manager Jimmy Bellis. Food pantries have increased needs during the summer when children arent in school, and were grateful for the opportunity to begin replenishing their shelves before our store opens.

A group of Wegmans employees will join representatives from Water Street Mission and Council of Churches to unload a Wegmans tractor trailer filled with 20 pallets of items such as canned soup, canned vegetables and fruit, cereal, juice, and other products. The food will then be loaded onto separate vehicles for distribution to each organization.

As a privately funded ministry, Water Street Mission relies on the support of individuals, churches, and businesses, said Water Street Mission President Jack Crowley. Were very grateful that Wegmans chose to help the Council of Churches and Water Street with this very generous gift. It says a lot about the Wegmans organization and their desire to make a positive impact as part of our Lancaster County community. We pray for their success and look forward to a close ongoing relationship.

The Food Hub at the Council continues to see significant demand for service from our neighbors in need, said Lancaster County Council of Churches Executive Director Gail Rittenhouse. It is through the generous donations from businesses like Wegmans that we are able to help ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.

Every year, Wegmans donates more than 14.5 million pounds of food to local food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens in all the communities it serves. For more information on Wegmans in Lancaster, please visit wegmans.com/lancaster.
