Blood Pressure

Has your blood pressure been creeping up? You're not alone. But unless something changes you're more likely to develop the full-blown medical condition of high blood pressure, also called hypertension.

A healthy lifestyle is the first critical step in preventing or treating elevated blood pressure. Along with routine blood pressure checks at your doctor's office, you can stop by our pharmacy and get your reading from one of the nearby blood pressure machines. Our Pharmacists are always nearby to help. Our Eat Well, Live Well principles are great tips to stay healthy, including lowering blood pressure.

Look for the "Heart Healthy" and "Low Sodium" Wellness Keys to help identify choices that may meet your needs.

Food Allergies

More and more customers are living with food allergies. Our Nature’s Marketplace department offers a variety of products specifically formulated to meet the needs of customers with food allergies. Ingredients and product formulations can change, so we encourage our customers to always read the labels of products to ensure that an allergen label has not been added or removed since their last purchase.

Allergen Labeling on Packaged Foods
The most common food allergens in the U.S.—the "top 8"—cause 90% of all severe food allergies. The top 8 allergens include Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Fish, Shellfish, Wheat and Soy. The FDA requires that the top 8 be listed in plain language on the package when present in a food.  Many Wegmans brand products also highlight the allergen statement with our Allergen Wellness Key making it easy to spot products that have a top 8 allergen.

Foods Prepared in our Stores
We cannot guarantee that foods prepared in the store would be free of food allergens.  With these items, there is a risk of cross contact with allergens due to shared preparation areas.

Look for the "Gluten-Free" Wellness Key on our Wegmans Brand products to find great-tasting, affordable foods to help you avoid gluten.

Before assigning the Gluten-Free Wellness Key, we work with our suppliers to verify the following:

  • The product's ingredients are not derived from wheat, rye, barley or oats.

  • All ingredients are investigated and verified, including processing aids and incidental additives.

  • Manufacturing environment, processing, scheduling, and good manufacturing practices are evaluated for the potential for cross contact with gluten.

  • The final product must have <20 ppm gluten from unavoidable gluten present due to inadvertent cross contact.

If there is any doubt or the supplier cannot guarantee gluten-free status, the product will not be labeled as gluten-free.

Some single-ingredient grocery, dairy and frozen Wegmans brand items meet our Gluten Free Wellness Key criteria but do not have a key on the product label. To find out if a single-ingredient item has been verified to be gluten-free, or anytime you have a question about the gluten-free status of our products, please contact Wegmans Consumer Affairs Department at 1-800-WEGMANS ext. 4760, or you can e-mail us on our contact us page.

Made with No Gluten-Containing Ingredients

Our stores have different layouts that make it difficult to implement company-wide protocols to prevent cross contact with gluten. Therefore we cannot guarantee that any food that is produced, sliced, packaged or served in our stores would be gluten-free. Some customers tell us they understand this risk, but want to know if we have prepared food items that are made without gluten as an ingredient. We identify some items that are made without gluten by listing “Made with No Gluten- Containing Ingredients, on the product's sign.

“Made with No Gluten-Containing Ingredients” does not mean the item is gluten-free.  It means that it does not have wheat, rye, or barley ingredients but may contain gluten due to shared preparation areas (shared preparation areas include ovens, cutting boards, utensils, grills and fryers).

Lactose Intolerance

If you are lactose intolerant, our "Lactose-Free" Wellness Key on Wegmans Brand products and recipes will help you find choices made without lactose, the natural sugar found in milk.

Keep in mind that it is often not an "all or nothing" issue. Just because a large glass of milk on an empty stomach causes symptoms doesn't mean that smaller amounts will be a problem. Work with your doctor or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist to find what types and amounts of lactose-containing foods are right for you.
