Wegmans Privacy Policy

Wegmans’ pledge to you

Since 1916, our business philosophy has been to be the very best at serving the wants and needs of our customers. Wegmans understands that you care how information about you is used and shared, and we appreciate your trust that we will use the information wisely and legitimately. You have our word that the personal data that we collect will only be used on behalf of giving you, our valued customer, our very best.

Why do we need personal data from you?

As detailed below, we collect personal data from you to serve you best. Whether, for example, it is in the form of your name and email address when you place an order with Meals 2GO, or your contact information when you sign up for the Wegmans Shoppers Club, we collect personal data so we can contact, identify, and serve you better. The data you provide helps us understand your preferences, so we can personalize and continually improve your shopping experience.

What personal data do we collect?

We collect the following personal data:

  • Contact information, such as name, address, telephone number, and email address
  • Your favorite stores, products, and recipes
  • Household information
  • Payment information
  • Questions, communications, and other content you submit
  • Wegmans.com login credentials
  • Purchases made with your Shoppers Club account or number, or with payment cards you have used with your Shoppers Club account or number
  • Job application information
  • Visual information, such as video recordings of you or your license plate numbers at our stores made for security purposes
  • Individual preferences and characteristics, such as inferences related to shopping patterns and behaviors
  • Other demographic information, such as age, income range, and other preferences
  • Wegmans website and mobile application (“app”) usage and activity information
  • Online identifiers, like cookie IDs, device IDs or IP addresses.

We collect information about you in a number of ways, including:

  • Directly from you or a member of your household
  • From a device associated with you or your household
  • Through in-store technology, such as use of in-store WiFi, video cameras, and point-of-sale equipment
  • By obtaining it from external third-party sources, such as marketing or advertising companies, service providers, and social media platforms
  • By drawing conclusions about you from data we have collected elsewhere.

In addition, when you visit our website or use our mobile apps, we use digital tracking tools (such as “cookies,” web beacons or pixels) to receive and store information whenever you interact with us through your computer or mobile device. This information, which may include the pages you visit on our site, your web address, the type of browser, device or hardware you are using, search terms, advertising identifier, mobile network information, and IP-based geographic location, helps us recognize you and customize your website experience. Digital tracking tools can also tell us what websites you have visited before visiting our website, which can help us better serve you. You can set your browser to reject and/or remove digital tracking tools at any time.

Some of our stores (including exterior facilities) utilize video surveillance and other fraud monitoring tools (collectively, “Security Equipment”) to create a safer environment for our staff and customers, and to deter, prevent, investigate and/or prosecute any illegal activity that may occur on our premises. Our video systems record digital images but do not record audio. Information from the Security Equipment (“Security Information”) is accessible only to a limited number of Wegmans employees, or to third-party service providers or law enforcement, engaged to assist with security-related tasks. The third-party service providers may have access to Security Information only where strictly required to perform their tasks, and are not allowed to use the Security Information for any other purposes; and we may provide Security Information to law enforcement for investigations, to prevent fraud or for safety and security purposes.

Tracking Tools and Analytics

We may use third-party digital tracking tools provided by third-party service providers to help us collect and analyze information about your use of our website. This information may include how often you visit our website, the pages you visit, and the other websites you use prior to visiting our website. We use this information to improve our website and your customer experience while on our site. Most third-party analytics tools collect only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit our website, rather than your name or other identifying information. Although third-party analytics tools store a digital tracking tool on your computer or device to identify you as a unique user the next time you visit our website, the digital tracking tool typically cannot be used by anyone but that third party. Some of these third-party service providers may collect information from our website for retargeting and more personalized interest-based advertising. Some third-party service providers may also build a profile of users’ online browsing activities. For more information about these forms of targeted advertising and to understand your right to opt out from these practices, please visit: https://youradchoices.com/choices-faq. Additional information on how to opt out of targeted advertising practices of NAI or DAA affiliated advertisers is available here: NAI Opt Out or DAA Opt Out. To further prevent targeted advertising based on browser behavior, you can disable digital tracking tools on your browser.

All third-party digital tracking tools that we use are hosted by the third parties providing them to Wegmans. These tools include the following:

Google. We may use Google Analytics to collect information regarding visitor behavior and demographics on our website, and to develop website content. For more information about Google Analytics, visit: http://www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/. You can opt out of Google’s collection and processing of data generated by your use of our website by going to: http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Facebook. We may use certain tools offered by Facebook that enable Facebook to collect or receive information about actions you take on our website through use of cookies or in order to provide measurement services, targeted ads and other services. For more information regarding the collection and use of such information by Facebook, see Facebook’s Privacy Policy at: https://www.facebook.com/policy.php.

If you make use of a Wegmans mobile application, we may use certain third-party tools for analytics in relation to mobile application usage as well.

Due to a lack of standardization regarding “Do Not Track” signals, we are not able to receive or honor “Do Not Track” signals received from browsers. Instead, you can use the range of other tools listed above to control information collection and use.

Your Account

If you have a Wegmans Shoppers Club account, the information you provided on your application is merged with your wegmans.com profile (if you choose to register for our online services). Whether we interact with you online or at our stores, we feel it’s important to have one account for you, to facilitate customer service.

The security of your account is very important to us. If you register for online services that we provide, we encourage you to use a strong password and not reuse a password that you use or have used elsewhere. Advice on how to create a strong password, including through use of a password manager program, is available here. Also, you can add multi-factor authentication protection to your account. Details are available here.

If you have any questions concerning the security of your account, or think that your account has been used by someone else without your permission, please contact us immediately at 1-800-WEGMANS (934-6267). We are always ready to help address any security concerns you have with your account.

Wegmans does not sell your personal data to anyone.

Where Wegmans de-identifies personal data in order to protect it, we will not re-identify such data and, if such de-identified data is shared with a third party as described below, we will take steps to ensure that no re-identification occurs. It is also important for us to keep certain information relating to your account, such as historical purchases, even if you request that we delete your personal data (see “Data Rights” section). If you do request deletion of your personal data, we will remove it from our databases and systems by deleting your data or de-identifying it, although we will retain any information we are required to keep by law.

Wegmans may work with third parties to show you tailored ads. We may also work with third-party platforms, like Google or Facebook, to show Wegmans ads on these platforms. We may also share de-identified data with third parties for targeting advertisements. If you provide us with your mobile telephone number, for example when you place an order through Meals 2GO, we may use that number to contact you, and may send you informational text messages about your order. For more information on our use of your telephone number, click here.

Lastly, if you place an order through our website or applications as a “guest,” we will retain the order information you provide, in case you have any questions about the order later.

How is your information shared?

  • Employees
Of course, our employees need access to your personal data to serve you better. Access to customer information, however, is limited to employees who need it in order to serve customers, maintain our information systems or for safety and security purposes. All employees with access to customer personal data are subject to our company privacy and information security policies.
  • Vendors
We may confidentially provide purchase information to vendors in aggregated (i.e., customer non-specific) or de-identified form in order to engage in planning, research and product development, or to bring you special offers on products and services.
  • Service Providers
We may confidentially share personal data with companies that provide support services to us, such as direct mail, marketing, email, web hosting, and payment processing. These companies are not authorized to share or use the information we provide for any other purpose.
  • Third Parties
Third parties that we contract with may use cookies and similar technologies to collect or receive information from our website and use that information to provide services on our behalf.
  • Other situations
We may release customer personal data when we believe it is necessary to comply with the law, enforce our legal rights; or to protect our customers or us. We may also provide de-identified purchase and profile data to product brands and advertisers that they may use to send ads to you (the ads reach you from such entities based on other de-identified and aggregated purchase and profile information they have, but not on identifiable information from us). We may also release your information if you request or authorize us to do so.

How do you protect my data?

  • Securing your personal data is a top priority. We have administrative, technical, and physical safeguards in place to protect your information. For example, our website uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption so that your personal data cannot be read as it passes over the Internet.
  • That being said, no information shared over the Internet or stored in a computer system is 100% safe.
  • Remember to keep your Wegmans account credentials secure. You should also be sure to secure the credentials you use to access your email account, so no one can impersonate you and steal your personal data. Also, be sure to sign off when finished using a shared computer or mobile device.

What information can I access about myself?

Wegmans.com gives you access to your profile so you can keep it updated and view it. All of the personal data you’ve shared with us in your profile is available to you through My Account. Please review your profile on a regular basis and update it so we can serve you better. Otherwise, you may have additional rights to access your personal data as detailed under “Data Rights” below.

Use of Chatbots

Wegmans.com may use automated chat features, or “chatbots.” Information collected by a chatbot is used only for the intended purpose stated at the time of collection, such as to answer a specific user question. We will only collect the information a user submits as part of a chatbot conversation, along with session information described generally in the “What personal data do we collect?” section above. We recommend users not submit personal or other sensitive information through the chatbot features; if you have a specific question requiring a detailed response, we recommend contacting us through one of the means noted below.

In order to maximize the potential that we can fulfill your request, please use the information that you provided in your Shoppers Club account or wegmans.com account, such as the contact email or mobile phone number you use with that account. In certain circumstances, we can reject your request. If you disagree with our decision, you may have the right to appeal our rejection of your request by using our data rights portal.

Also, our mobile applications collect information about the location of your device. You must first provide permission through your device before our mobile applications can obtain such location information from technologies like GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell tower proximity (or a combination of these technologies). We, and our service providers, may use and store this information, in combination with other location-based information such as IP address and billing address, to provide enhanced location-based services, such as store-specific services, search results, and other content. Also, you may opt out from further allowing us to have access to your location data by adjusting the permissions in your mobile device.
