Syracuse Events Shine a Light on Native American Culture

In honor of Native American Heritage Month this November, we’re spotlighting a variety of events supported by our Syracuse, New York division that celebrate the rich traditions of Indigenous peoples. These gatherings offer opportunities for visitors to experience Native American culture through vibrant art, authentic cuisine, and captivating performances.

Native American Education Program at North Syracuse Central School District

The North Syracuse Central School District provides Native American students with opportunities to meet their unique educational and culturally related academic needs through their Native American Education Program. In June, middle school students from the program visited the Ganondagan State Historic Site in Rochester, N.Y. During their visit, the students explored a bark longhouse, participated in Native outdoor games, and learned about the cultural significance of wampum. The trip helped students to gain knowledge and understanding of Native communities, traditions, and cultures.

Onondaga Community College Haudenosaunee Arts Festival

In August, Onondaga Community College hosted their first-ever Haudenosaunee Arts Festival, celebrating the culture, heritage, and ongoing contributions of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (Onondaga, Mohawk, Oneida, Seneca, and Tuscarora Nations). The event included an artisan market, cultural performances, educational demonstrations, and native foods. The goal of the festival was to build bridges between communities by showcasing similarities among all people.

Haudenosaunee Wooden Stick Festival and Restore Our Sacred Lake 5K Run

Held at Onondaga Lake Park in September, the 10th Annual Wooden Stick Festival and Lacrosse tournament served local visitors as well as guests from across N.Y. and Canada. The weekend featured local indigenous vendors and craftsmen, a wooden stick lacrosse tournament, a Native Smoke Dance competition, a 5K run, and traditional native foods. Hosted by the American Indian Law Alliance (AILA), the event sought to raise awareness of the history of Onondaga Lake while also celebrating Haudenosaunee culture.
