Celebrating Organizations That Support Women

At Wegmans, we’re devoted to being a good neighbor in every community we serve. We do this by partnering with community organizations that share our values and align with our giving priorities, which includes local organizations that serve women and children.

West Cary, North Carolina

The Carying Place, founded in 1993, stands out for its focus on empowering homeless working families—especially women and children—through a blend of financial management education and transitional housing. Unlike traditional human services, The Carying Place goes beyond simply offering shelter; it requires participants to demonstrate motivation and readiness to address their financial challenges, aiming to break the cycle of generational homelessness.

“We are attacking the lack of financial ability, one family at a time,” shares Carying Place Executive Director Leslie Covington. “The majority of individuals who have benefited from the program are single mothers and their children.”

Currently, The Carying Place owns 15 housing units and is set to expand further in partnership with a local church and affordable housing developer, which will add 11 new units. Families enter through an interview-based process, and the four-month program includes weekly meetings on financial planning for both adults and children. The organization also supports graduates with workforce development and homeownership preparation, celebrating success stories such as former participants who have gone on to buy homes and join the board of directors.

Community involvement is critical to The Carying Place’s success. Volunteers, including families and local businesses like Wegmans, help maintain properties and guide families through their financial journeys.

“Wegmans has given us a voice, helping people understand our work through advocacy, financial support, and volunteerism,” Covington notes.

Wegmans has supported The Carying Place through sponsoring fundraising events, providing meals for families, and volunteering to assist in maintenance needs. For those interested in supporting The Carying Place, opportunities include volunteering, financial donations, and spreading awareness about homelessness. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The All Things Cancer and Wellness Expo, hosted by the non-profit Byrd Cancer Foundation, is making waves in Philadelphia as a rapidly expanding community health event. Entering its third year, the Expo draws hundreds of attendees and strong support from organizations like Wegmans, with the goal to advance cancer awareness, prevention, and holistic wellness.

The Expo distinguishes itself by offering a wide range of free cancer screenings—breast, prostate, skin, cervical, and oncology dental. Radiation-free breast screening technology is also featured, making the Expo accessible to more women, including those who are pregnant.

“These screenings are having a real impact,” shared Byrd Cancer Foundation President Nia Bailey. “We have had a few incidents of skin cancer being detected and Advanced Dermatology, one of our vendors, was able to follow up and help them.”

The free, family event goes beyond screenings, featuring panels for survivors and caregivers, workshops on estate and financial planning, genetic testing, and healthy living.

“Last year we had a caregiver panel, financial planning, and estate planning workshops,” said Trudean Haye, Byrd Cancer Foundation executive director. “Interactive activities range from sewing, bead workshops, and painting to journaling, IV treatments, and even an oxygen bar.”

The All Things Cancer and Wellness Expo will be held April 18 in Center City, Philadelphia. To learn more about supporting, attending, or volunteering, or to sign up for a free screening, visit cancerwellnessexpo.com.

Wegmans is proud to amplify the voice and work of organizations that support our communities. These partnerships allow us to make a true difference in the lives of those who need it most.
