Look for a spot where there's a valley between the shell halves, Press hard to wedge the blade in between the shell halves, and continue driving the blade into the clam to cut the muscle. Turn the clam on its side and pry it open Slide the blade under the meat of both halves, and cut the muscle and meat away from the shell. (try to save the juice.) Opening clams gets easier with practice.
