Ale. The Blue Point Brewing Company?: Tucked inside a blink-and-you'll-miss-it building on Patchogue's River Avenue beats the heart of Long Island's first craft brewery. There's no showy signage to indicate the award-winning beer being brewed at the moment or that Blue Point's wildly popular tasting room is pouring more than a dozen fresh craft beers, to the delight of local fans and beer aficionados from points east and west. The brainchild of Mark Burford and Pete Cotter, Blue Point Brewing Company's street-front anonymity is part of its charm and reflects the workaday philosophy shared by its founders. Never trying to please everyone, they started out brewing what they liked to drink and it caught on. In a big way. Beer is brewed almost every day and night while kegs, growlers, and bottles are cleaned, filled, packed, and loaded onto trucks that roll in and out most hours of the day. Far beyond just a microbrewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, the men behind it, and the folks chosen to support their mission, have created a community within the community of Patchogue--where hopheads in collars blue and white can debate the intricacies of an IPA. Where they fill a really, really large cask every April and unite with other brewers to host the Cask Ales festival. Where live music is a centerpiece of every brewery event. White IPA: 40 IBU; 1.060 OG; 6.1% ABV. Remaining at the forefront of experimentation, the brewers at Blue Point have produced a white beer/IPA hybrid that is well on its way to creating a new style for the beer description books. Blue Point's White IPA is an unfiltered European-style white ale with a fresh American IPA finish. Brewed with malted and unmalted wheat and finished with just the right amount of west coast hops, Blue Point's White IPA is fermented with German yeast to give it a perfectly balanced character with the perfect amount of bitterness. Mosaic Session IPA: 50 IBU; 1.046 OG; 4.8% ABV. An homage to Blue Point Brewing Company's storied history--a tale that is preserved on the original Tasting Room bar top that dates to 1997--Mosaic Session IPA is a straw-colored, West Coast style that showcases serious aroma. Mosaic, Simcoe, and Centennial hops lend strong topical fruit characteristics to a light body and dry finish, packing complex India Pale Ale flavor without all the punch. Hopitcal Illusion? IPA: 66 IBU; 1.054 OG; 6.8% ABV. Inspired by ancient lore that the Egyptians stuffed their pillows with fresh hops in the belief that the aroma brought on intense, vivid dreams, Hoptical Illusion proved a dream come true for hop heads far and wide. Hopped five different ways before bottling for maximum hop flavor and aroma, Hoptical Illusion's resiny, citrusy up-front flavor burst is known as the "essence of the hop" and is balanced perfectly by a creamy malt backbone. RastafaRye? Ale: 48 IBU; 1.066 OG; 7.6% ABV. RastafaRye Ale's hearty rye malt blended with fresh west coast hops, results in a delicious, deep copper ale with just the right amount of rye flavor to offset the spicy,loral characteristics of Summit, Cascade, and Centennial hops. Beyond just a local crowd favorite, RastafaRye Ale is one of Blue Point's most award winning brews--recently picking up bronze medals at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival and 2014 World Beer Cup.
