Wegmans Makes Springtime Delivery: A Truckload Filled with More Than 17,000 Pounds of Food to The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore

NORFOLK, VA, Mar 20, 2019On March 21 at 10 a.m., Wegmans Virginia Beach will make its first delivery to The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore with a truckload of 17,284 pounds of non-perishable food. The donation includes 20 pallets of canned goods, cereals, snacks, assorted beverages, condiments, baking mixes and other ingredients.

Local grocery stores have been integral to our mission, in terms of providing food and funds to help children and families facing food insecurity in our service area, said Ruth Jones Nichols, CEO, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. We are grateful for Wegmans support and pleased to have gained another partner willing to join us in our efforts to eliminate hunger in Southeastern Virginia and on the Eastern Shore.

When the Wegmans tractor-trailer arrives at the food bank, Store Manager Mike Coyle will be on hand along with a team of employees from the Virginia Beach store to help unload the truck. In addition to the food donation, the store team will present a $7,200 check to the United Way of South Hampton Roads, representing a corporate gift combined with contributions already raised by Wegmans Virginia Beach employees.

Food banks build healthier communities and food for the hungry is one of our most important giving priorities, said Coyle. Its a privilege for us to partner with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and begin making a difference even before our store opens next month.

Last year in all its market areas, Wegmans donated more than 14.5 million pounds of fresh and non-perishable food to food banks. Wegmans also makes it easy for shoppers to join in supporting local hunger relief efforts by participating in annual food bank programs where shoppers who wish to make a donation at checkout can have any amount added to their bill and 100% of those donations go directly to local agencies that feed the needy. Since 1993, Wegmans has raised more than $38.8 million for hunger relief through these checkout campaigns.

About Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore:
For over 35 years, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore has provided over 261 million meals to those in our community who face hunger. Through our programs, facilities, and large network of community partners, we eliminate hunger on a daily basis for many. However, we understand that our current work addresses hunger for individuals in the short term. It does not address the root causes which force individuals to return to a food pantry again and again. This understanding has led to the creation of a new 3-year strategic plan aimed to move Hampton Roads closer to achieving the mission of eliminating hunger for those we serve not only for the day, or for the week, but for a lifetime.
