Wegmans Celebrates 25 Years of Working Together for Hunger Relief

Rochester, N.Y., Feb 05, 2019 – Since 1993, Wegmans Food Markets has partnered with local food banks for its annual Check Out Hunger campaign that, with the support and generosity of customers and employees, has raised more than $38.8 million for hunger relief. In 2018, the 25th year of the campaign, Wegmans customers raised $3,295,214. During the campaign, customers have the option of donating $1, $2, $3, $5, or any other amount at checkout with 100 percent of the proceeds going to each store’s local food bank.

Each year, the money so generously donated by our customers goes a long way in the fight against hunger, said Wegmans Community Relations Manager Linda Lovejoy. This year, the funds raised during our fall campaign were distributed to our partner food banks at a time when so many more of our neighbors found themselves in need, and our entire network of food banks was seeing an increase in demand.

To help address the increased need, in mid-January, Wegmans donated a truckload of 17,300 pounds of non-perishable food to the Capital Area Food Bank. A team of Wegmans employees from the Woodmore, Maryland store were on hand at the food bank to help unload the truck.

Every dollar counts in the fight against hunger, and we cant thank our customers and employees enough for helping us reduce the hunger that exists right in our own communities, added Lovejoy. The impact weve made over the last 25 years is a great example of how our communities thrive when we all work together.
