Sept. 29 can’t come soon enough for Raleigh Store Manager Hallie Johnston, the store’s 475 employees, and eager residents who have called, emailed, and posted online comments since plans to bring Wegmans Food Markets to North Carolina were announced back in 2016.
At the time, social media lit up with joyful comments like, “Thank you @Wegmans for making me the happiest person in the world today! Welcome to North Carolina!” and “North Carolina is getting a Wegmans. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
The wait is nearly over: Wegmans Raleigh, located at 1200 Wake Towne Drive, opens for business at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
As further proof of anticipation for the opening, Johnston points to the more than 24,000 Raleigh customers (as of Sept. 24) who have signed up for Wegmans Shoppers Club via the store’s website and app.
Johnston and her team are grateful for the warm welcome the family company has already received. They’re also ready to make sure the new store lives up to its hype on the things Wegmans is known for: incredible customer service, the best ingredients, and consistent low prices.
When introducing new employees to the company, Johnston highlights Wegmans’ long history, from a humble produce cart in 1916 to its fourth-generation leadership with Colleen Wegman’s appointment as CEO in 2017 and the strategic growth of stores that continues year after year.
“These employees are now part of our rich history,” said Johnston. “It’s important that they know where we came from and the values of the company, so they can continue to build on that legacy.”
In addition to more than 4,000 organic choices throughout the store, Wegmans Raleigh will offer a dazzling variety of restaurant foods prepared by Executive Chef Rob Santiago and his culinary staff of 120.
“I’m excited to show people what we offer that’s not available here today,” he says. “Family dinners can be tricky, and our customers will be able to come in and find something that makes everyone happy, whether it’s from The Burger Bar, fresh sushi, a made-to-order salad, authentic Italian pizza, a submarine, or anything off one of our hot and cold food bars.”
With plans moving forward for five additional stores in the Raleigh-Durham area, including the West Cary location on Davis Drive opening in 2020, Wegmans’ hiring and training efforts remain ongoing. Applicants may apply online at https://jobs.wegmans.com/.
“I love the collaborative spirit of Raleigh,” said Store Manager Johnston. “The businesses and communities here work together to make the area a great place for everyone to live, work, and play. I can’t wait for Wegmans to be part of this community.”
