On Thursday, June 15th at 10:00 am, Wegmans Food Markets delivered more than 8,700 pounds of food, or approximately half of a trailer-load, to the Interfaith Food Pantry (IFP) at 2 Executive Drive, Morris Plains. The donated food was just one of two shipments, the second scheduled for September will be of similar size, bringing the total donation to the equivalent of a full tractor-trailer load. The donation is being made to commemorate the opening of the new Hanover Wegmans, scheduled for July 23rd. The new 128,000 square-foot supermarket, including space leased to a third-party owner for a wine, beer, and spirits shop, will be located at 34 Sylvan Way, Hanover (at the intersection of I-287 and NJ Route 10).
Since announcing plans to move to Morris County more than two years ago, Wegmans has partnered with the Interfaith Food Pantry, sponsoring several events including the IFP’s Annual Spring Gala and Golf Outing, as well as several volunteer-led events, including the IFP’s “Kitchen to Table” program. The Kitchen to Table program is aimed at providing nutritious easy-to-prepare meals to elderly and disabled clients served by the IFP’s home delivery program. The Wegmans Hanover leadership team has cooked more than 200 meals on-site at the IFP since they began in February.
The donation will supplement the food the Pantry currently distributes to nearly 10,000 Morris County residents in need. Pantry clients include low-income working families, seniors and those with disabilities living on fixed incomes and many others in need or crisis. The timing of the first donation coincides with the IFP’s need for supplies during the summer when food donations run low, and at the same time, many families request additional items because their children who receive meals at school are now being fed at home. The fall donation coincides with the IFP’s need to replenish supplies from the high demand seen throughout the summer months.
The Interfaith Food Pantry is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) community-based organization that serves Morris County residents by providing food, education and related resources to Morris County residents during their time of need. The organization distributed over one million pounds of food in 2016. For more information, visit www.mcifp.org.
