Wegmans Midlothian Leadership Team Brings More than 130 Years of Combined Wegmans Experience to Richmond

Midlothian, VA, April 25, 2016 -

Wegmans Food Markets today announced the leadership team spearheading the management of its Midlothian store, opening May 22 at Stonehenge Village Shopping Center on the Midlothian Turnpike, just east of Farnham Drive. The team consists of the store manager, executive chef, pharmacy area manager, and three area managers who each supervise several departments. Together, this group has more than 130 years of experience working for the 100-year-old family-owned company.

“Each member of this group shares our values and brings a wealth of Wegmans knowledge to Midlothian,” said Heather Gole, human resources manager of the company’s Virginia stores. “Their experience and passion are vital in developing our new employees and introducing Wegmans to the community. We’re still hiring and training for full-time culinary and restaurant positions at Midlothian, such as line cooks and Asian cuisine, as well as various part-time positions throughout the store. Store Manager Jerry Shelly

Jerry Shelly grew up near Niagara Falls in the town of Niagara, N.Y. After several years working in the restaurant industry, Wegmans hired him as a management trainee in 1989. He started in the produce department at a store in Buffalo, later becoming the department manager and eventually working his way up to perishable area manager. In 2006, Shelly became a Wegmans store manager in Pa., and most recently managed the Malvern store near Philadelphia. He’s eager to welcome new employees to the company and bring a new shopping experience to Richmond.

Executive Chef Craig Haines

Executive Chef Craig Haines’ love of cooking began at the age of five when his mother asked for help turning the crank of an old food mill filled with homegrown tomatoes in the kitchen of their family home in Pa. He entered the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University in 1989 and got his start in the kitchens of a large hotel chain before joining Wegmans in State College, Pa. in 2002. In Midlothian he’ll lead a team of 130 culinarians in the prepared foods areas like sushi, the Asian bar, pizza, subs, and The Pub restaurant.

Pharmacy Area Manager Jeff Mallon

Jeff Mallon, PharmD, joined Wegmans in 2006 as a pharmacy technician and further honed his skills as a pharmacy intern before graduating from Rutgers University and becoming a pharmacist. As Pharmacy Area Manager, Mallon will lead the Midlothian pharmacy and its staff, helping employees and customers live healthier, better lives. Pharmacy services include immunizations, auto-refill of prescriptions, free home shipping, pet medications, and competitively low prices on select generic prescriptions.

Perishable Area Manager Shawn MacKay

Shawn MacKay began working at Wegmans in 1994 and has experience in a variety of positions, including deli customer service, seafood manager, food and human safety manager, prepared foods manager, and service area manager. As perishable area manager in Midlothian, he will oversee product quality, sales, and employee development for the produce, floral, bakery, seafood, meat, cheese, and deli departments. MacKay will ensure Wegmans’ high standards for the freshest ingredients are met and employees are prepared to share in-depth food knowledge with Wegmans customers.

Merchandising Area Manager Jeff Blankenship

Jeff Blankenship has been with Wegmans since 1986, previously serving as a department manager in dairy, front end, prepared foods, and grocery before becoming a service area manager. In his new role, he supervises merchandising and sales for a variety of departments, such as grocery, dairy, frozen food, and Nature’s Marketplace. Blankenship will work collaboratively across the store to ensure products are well stocked and displayed to make grocery shopping outstanding for Wegmans customers.

Service Area Manager Laurie Shadders

Laurie Shadders has been a Wegmans employee since 1987. She started as a cashier, working her way up as a front end coordinator, floral manager, service team leader, pharmacy team leader, and front end manager. As service area manager, she will lead the front end, customer service desk, helping hands (parking lot attendants), and the accounting office. Shadders will ensure incredible customer service, a point of distinction at Wegmans. She will also supervise local community giving, carrying out Wegmans’ commitment to make a difference in every community it serves.

Wegmans Midlothian is a 115,000 square-foot supermarket that includes a Market Café with indoor and outdoor seating for more than 250, as well as The Pub, Wegmans’ full-service family restaurant within the store, known for fresh, seasonal food and local craft beer.
