Sustainability: Pasta Sauce the Planet Feels Good About, Thanks to Wegmans' New Jar

Rochester, NEW YORK, September 12, 2016 -

Mmm! Pasta and a jar of Wegmans “Food You Feel Good About” pasta sauce! Put them together and they make wonderful weeknight dinners for families who crave fast, healthy, and delicious meals the whole family loves. Now, Wegmans Food Markets is giving customers a new reason to feel good about this popular line of pasta sauces: they’re bottled in a jar made from lighter weight PET plastic, the type used for water and soda bottle containers. The new jars are reaching store shelves in the early fall.

Wegmans Sustainability Manager Jason Wadsworth listed several reasons why the switch from glass jars to PET is beneficial:

PET plastic jars are

  • Shatter resistant – they don’t break easily if accidentally dropped
  • Lighter in weight than glass, and can therefore be shipped to stores with less fuel
  • More widely recycled than glass, therefore reducing the need for landfill space

Sustainability is a priority at Wegmans and the company continually seeks ways to shrink the carbon footprint involved in bringing food to customers. One important way to do that is to lower carbon emissions by using less fossil-based fuels to transport foods along the chain from farms to processing plants to the store. The weight of an item plays a role in how much fuel trucks use to complete a journey, so Wegmans saw an opportunity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels if the packaging of a high-volume item like pasta sauce could be made lighter without sacrificing any quality or safety.

Wegmans and LiDestri Foods Inc., the supplier that makes Wegmans’ “Food You Feel Good About” line of pasta sauces, began exploring improved environmental options some months ago, from the material used to the shape of the jar. (If you can put more jars on each shipping pallet, you can cut down the number of trips needed to bring the pasta sauce to the store).

“By switching from glass to PET jars,” said Wadsworth, “the same amount of pasta sauce can be shipped each year using 55 fewer trucks. That change can save 974 gallons of diesel fuel, cutting carbon dioxide emissions   the equivalent of driving around the Earth once in an average passenger vehicle.”

Wegmans is committed to making a difference in the communities it serves with a focus on reducing its emissions, reducing waste in landfills and offering sustainable product and packaging choices for its customers. To learn more about sustainability efforts at Wegmans, visit www.wegmans.com.
