Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add lemon halves to water in medium bowl; add sliced apples to lemon water to prevent browning.
     
  2. Toast almonds on cookie sheet until light brown.
     
  3. Place one sheet phyllo onto clean, dry cutting board or kitchen surface. Brush with 1 Tbsp butter; sprinkle 1 Tbsp cinnamon-sugar mixture.
     
  4. Cover with second phyllo sheet; brush with 1 Tbsp butter and sprinkle with 1 Tbsp cinnamon-sugar mixture. Top with last phyllo sheet; brush with remaining butter.
     
  5. Slice dough in half lengthwise, using large chef's knife. Make parallel cut about 3 inches on each side of center line. Sheet will be cut into 4 equal width strips.
     
  6. Divide sheets into 24 squares by cutting dough in half (width-wise) and then making 2 equal width-wise cuts above center line and 2 equal width-wise cuts below center line.
     
  7. Slide individual squares onto cookie sheet lined with parchment and bake until golden brown, 10-15 min. Watch carefully as they might get too dark.
     
  8. Melt 1/2 Tbsp butter in saute pan on HIGH. Add drained apples; sprinkle with remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture. Cook until soft, 5-8 min.
     
  9. Melt caramel apple dip in small saucepan on MED; stirring occasionally. Reduce heat.
     
  10. Place 2 Tbsp apple on each phyllo square; top with 1 tsp warm caramel and 1 Tbsp almonds. Top with another phyllo square, 2 Tbsp apple, 1 tsp warm caramel, 1 Tbsp almonds and third phyllo square. Garnish each finished dessert with almonds and powdered sugar.
Chef Tips
  • Use a mandolin to slice apples thinly.
  • Also, keep dessert from sliding with a small dab of caramel on plate.
