Feeding the Hungry

One of our highest giving priorities is providing food for people at risk of hunger. We do this in a multitude of ways, from daily donations to food banks to seasonal checkout campaigns that allow our customers to help hungry neighbors to annual special events, like holiday giving. Here are just a few of the ways we make our communities better and healthier through food.

Every year, Wegmans donates over 14.5 million pounds of food to local food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens in all the communities we serve.

Perishable Pick Up Program

Fighting hunger and food waste

In 2016, our stores provided over 8 million pounds of food.

Wegmans supports many hunger-fighting organizations through a variety of programs, from fundraising to food distribution, and we think one of our most important efforts is the Perishable Pick Up Program. Every day since 1990, Wegmans employees have been choosing and packing items like baked goods, yogurt, cheeses, cold cuts, fruits and veggies—all safe and wholesome to eat but no longer saleable—for pick-up by over 300 local food pantries. In 2016, our stores provided over 8 million pounds of food through this program, plus 6.5 million pounds of nonperishable packaged goods—that’s the equivalent of 362 tractor trailer loads. "It's great to know that the food isn’t wasted and we’re helping keep hungry local families fed," says Linda Lovejoy, Wegmans Community Relations Manager.

  • Daily, Wegmans stores donate 5-6 shopping carts and 10 large boxes of food.
  • Each store works with 3-5 local pantries who pick up this food every day.

Counterclockwise from top: Sheridan Drive Wegmans employees (Buffalo, NY) package bread for pickup; volunteers from the Food Shuttle of Western NY pick up boxes of bread; helpers at Trinity Episcopal Church of Lancaster, NY, unload loaves for their food pantry.

Food Bank Donations

We love to support many events for the foodbanks in the communities we serve--by the bag, the basket, and the truckload!

Check Out Hunger / Care About Hunger

Millions for hunger relief

Once a year, in all our stores, Wegmans cashiers offer customers the chance to add a small donation to their order and 100% of the funds collected goes to help local food banks!

  • Since these programs began in 1993, Wegmans has raised over $33 million+ for hunger relief at its checkouts.

Fill the Bus / Fill the Backpack

So kids won't go hungry

In 2017, Wegmans "Fill the Bus" campaigns collected 890,947 lbs of food which is 481,892 lbs more than 2016.

Kids who receive free or lower-cost school meals might miss out on needed nutrition on weekends or holiday breaks—“Fill the Bus” and backpack programs bridge that gap!

Each Friday, kids at risk of going hungry receive a “backpack” or bag of nutritious food they can manage on their own, like single serve juices, cereal, easy-to-open canned fruit, peanut butter and jelly or soups.

Donation & Community Sponsorship Requests

Consider our five giving priorities and submit your donation or community sponsorship request online. All donation & community sponsorship requests must be submitted through our online donation request form. Wegmans does not accept written, faxed or emailed requests.

We wish we could lend our support to every request we receive, however, there are several types of requests that Wegmans is unable to accommodate.

We help make a difference through our five key giving priorities:
  1. Feeding the Hungry
  2. Helping Young People Succeed
  3. Encouraging Healthy Eating & Activity
  4. Enriching Store Neighborhods
  5. Supporting United Way Inititives
