Feeding the Hungry

In 1970, food donations to local food banks began at all stores. In 2015, our company donated 14.5 million pounds of food, which equals 362 tractor trailer loads!

In addition, once a year Wegmans cashiers in all its stores ask customers as they're checking out if they'd like to add a small donation to their order knowing that 100% of it will go to help their local food bank. Since the "Check out Hunger" program began in 1993, Wegmans has raised more than $26 million for hunger relief at its checkouts.

By providing support to food banks, we are positively impacting hundreds of agencies that receive food from the food banks.

Helping Young People Succeed

In 1987, the Work Scholarship connection was established and currently operates in 4 of our divisions. It helps students finish high school and develop work skills needed for success as adults. Since 1987, this program has helped 5,000+ young people graduate from high school with a 94% graduation rate for students employed at partner companies.

Encouraging healthy eating & activity

We're committed to improving the lives of our customers and employees in every way we can, especially in the areas of health and wellness. Our search for fun ways to get folks off the sofa was the inspiration behind our popular Eat Well, Live Well "Passport to Family Wellness" program.

Enriching store neighborhoods

In 2015, Wegmans opened a children’s exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the first gallery on the National Mall designed for the learning needs of children from infancy to age six.

We now have kids exhibits in 4 museums and Explore and More coming in 2018 to Buffalo.

Supporting United Way Initiatives

Wegmans commitment to the United Way is embedded in the culture of the company. For decades Wegmans and its employees have been contributing to local United Way agencies in all our market areas because it remains the easiest way to get needed funds to agencies that get measurable results. In 2014, almost $5 million was distributed to a total of 36 local United Way agencies through weekly employee payroll deductions and a corporate gift.

It’s not just about writing checks and collecting money. Hundreds of employees participate in Day of Caring events across the company and serve on United Way committees and boards. Both Robert Wegman and Danny Wegman have had past leadership roles and been supportive of the United Way and Colleen is following in their footsteps; she served as the 2010 campaign chair and currently serves as the chair of the 2015 United Way board of directors.
