Principle 4: Measure Your Progress

Health Measurements: Blood Pressure

What is it?

Measures blood flow resistance in the blood vessels when the heart contracts and at rest.

Why is it included?

High blood pressure is called hypertension and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

How is it measured?

You can now find automated blood pressure cuffs in the store. Or, stop into Wegmans Pharmacy and use the blood pressure machine provided. Otherwise, you will need a trained medical professional to accurately determine your blood pressure. Make sure to relax prior to checking your blood pressure. Don't rush into the store, and take your blood pressure too quickly or you might get an inaccurate reading. If you are feeling a bit stressed, have a seat and relax a few minutes first.

What do the numbers mean?

When you have your blood pressure taken at the doctor, you are told 2 numbers, like 120/80. Both numbers are important.

  • The first number is your pressure when your heart beats (systolic pressure).
  • The second number is your pressure when your heart relaxes (diastolic pressure).

Ranges

Blood Pressure: Systolic/Diastolic (mm/Hg)
Normal = <120 / <80
Pre-Hypertensive = 120-139 / 80-89
Hypertensive = 140 or higher / 90 or higher
