Principle 2: Get Moving

Respect the Risks and Reap the Rewards

Not worth the risk—think again!

Physical activity is safe for almost everyone and the health benefits far outweigh any risks. Even inactive people who slowly build their physical activity levels over time have a low risk of getting injured. Yet, a rapid increase in physical activity level raises the chance of injury and discouragement.

Many folks find that when they get moving they improve or prevent symptoms for several health concerns. Regardless of your age or health status, be sure to get an OK from your doctor before starting a new physical activity.

Diabetes

Regular physical activity can help lower blood sugar and keep it down.

For more information visit the American Diabetes Association website and enter “physical activity” in the search box.

Arthritis

Gentle movement prevents joints from getting stiff.

Building stronger muscles helps to support joints. For more information go to the Arthritis Foundation website and enter “physical activity” in the search box.

High Blood Pressure

Regular physical activity, specifically aerobic activities, can lower blood pressure. For more information, go the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s website, Your Guide to Lowering Blood Pressure.

Aging and Frailty

Regular physical activity helps maintain muscle needed to perform daily tasks (e.g. carrying laundry or pulling items down from a pantry shelf). It also helps maintain balance, prevent falls and improve overall quality of life.

For more information go to the National Institute on Aging website and enter “physical activity” in the search box.
