Global Wine Discoveries

Global Wine Discoveries

We’ve put together a collection of fantastic, affordable wines that you simply won’t find in most wine shops—they’re special “Wegmans Discovery” wines that our team has brought home from around the globe. We chatted with Sherwood Deutsch and Michael Misch (who head up our Wine Team) about how they make their choices, and we’ve provided details to help you pair one
with your next meal.

France

To make the cut and qualify for this list, these wines have to do three things:

  1. Taste as good as—or better than—wines costing twice
    as much.
  2. Reflect the character of the region where they’re made.
  3. Pair beautifully with food. Give them a try, and taste what makes these discoveries so special.

Mas Rabell8.99

Spain

Mas Rabell Winery

The fortified farmhouse of Mas Rabell, built in the 14th century, stands at the foot of the castle of Sant Martí Sarroca. It’s after this farmhouse that Torres Mas Rabell, the house wine of the Torres family, is named.

Red: You’ll experience a nice blending of blackberries and spice, and a velvety texture, with aromas of licorice and forest fruits.

Try it with: Legume/rice dishes with meat and veggies, stews, BBQ.

White: Many whites from this region are plodding or austere. This one’s packed with lots of ripe tropical fruit flavors and rose/rosemary aromas. Soft tannins make it easy to drink.

Try it with: Lightly flavored seafood. Nice with desserts, too.

California

Leaf Street Vineyards

We did a year’s worth of tastings to find a California wine that’s not a “fruit bomb.” This Napa Valley wine-producing house isn’t famous (yet). They’re still under the radar, but their wines are delicious!

Chardonnay: You’ll taste bright peach/pear aromas, gentle hints of apple pie and toasted French oak, and a crisp finish.

Try it with: White meats, lighter fare, salads, soft-ripened cheeses.

Merlot: No big tannins here, just easy-drinking smoky cherry flavors and a very soft, mild finish. A touch of spice.

Try it with: Seafood, Asian foods, and poultry dishes.

Argentina

Bodegas Molino Winery

From a winery established in 1883, nestled in the eastern foothills of the Andes—these wines are created from hand-picked grapes grown in Argentina’s most famous wine region, Mendoza, near the Cuyo Valley.

Malbec: This wine has old world-style fruit. It’s not overpowering, heavy or inky like some regional reds. Malbec is the red grape of Argentina, and it’s perfected in this excellent food-loving red.

Torrentes: Unoaked and made with Argentina’s indigenous white grape, this lean wine is beautifully floral in fragrance with a fruity-steely style.
