I would like to teach everyone in the world to make miso soup as one small step towards world peace.  Miso soup is so good for the body and soul—it’s gentle, delicious.  You can almost feel the goodness running through you with a kind of magical healing quality.

Miso is a paste made by fermenting soybeans with a culture called koji.  It’s a similar process to that’s used to make traditional soy sauces.  When you buy miso the culture is alive, and you cook miso soup so the culture is still alive.  So miso soup has all the benefits of probiotics, like yoghurt. Last year I went with the Nature’s Marketplace team to Expo West, the Natural Products Trade Show, in Anaheim, California.  It was a fantastic experience—like entering a vast treasure chest!  There were thousands of natural foods products, natural health and beauty aids, and everywhere bright inventive, creative people.  I spent three full days cruising the booths, sampling, and scouting out products we might carry in Wegmans.

Fresh Ideas For Friday – Cream of Cabbage Soup

When I was fourteen our family lived in Cork, Ireland, for a year.  It was a time of high adventure.  My unknowing parents enrolled each of us kids in private Catholic schools, having been advised to do so.  We weren’t Catholics, however, so it involved lots of time sitting out in the hall during religion classes for me.  I did learn Latin and memorized lots of poetry!  I’m very grateful for that.  I never saw any cabbage being eaten, and they didn’t celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day.  So here’s to us in the United States!!  We make our holidays as we choose.
