From the Farm: Purple Passion Asparagus

Treat yourself to a wonderful vegetable that will make you an instant fan! Purple Passion Asparagus is sweeter and more tender than the green variety. Here at the farm, we call it our veggie “candy”! The mild, sweet flavor will satisfy any connoisseur and win over any fussy eater. What makes this asparagus sweeter than green or white? It has 20 % high sugar content than other varieties. And, it’s less fibrous so you can enjoy more of the stalk.

Because of Purple Passion’s intense flavor, we think you’ll find it hard to resist munching on it raw. It will add beautiful color to any salad or hors d’oeuvre. Once cooked, the veggie’s purplish color turns dark green, with a pale green to creamy white flesh.  I enjoy my asparagus grilled or sautéed to bring out a nutty flavor.

Thinking Spring? Think Starting Seeds!

Written by on March 7th, 2012.

It’s that time of year again when we can begin planning what to grow in our gardens.  I like to start my plants from seeds, and (depending on what climate zone you are in) that time may be coming up soon. How can you tell? Your plant seed packet shows how many weeks before your last frost date you need for starting the plants.

We at Wegmans challenge you to get growing with us this year.  Remember, you can put a garden just about anywhere, and with the right soil and fertilizer it will not take as long as you may think to reap the benefits.  We’ll be carrying an expandable 4’X4’ raised garden bed made of cedar (produced in Wrightsville, PA).  One of these can yield enough vegetables to make a salad every day from your own backyard in a growing season.  Who doesn’t want that?

From the Farm: Cold-Hardy Winter Greens

Written by on January 26th, 2012.

As we look out our windows and notice the blanket of snow forming over our yards, local organic produce may be the last thing we expect to see in Wegmans. If you are someone who strives to eat seasonally, winter greens, like spinach, mustard, and kale, should be your vegetable of choice! Ideally, they haven’t traveled far from field to fork, like the “cold-hardy” greens currently at their peak from Wegmans Organic Farm here in the Finger Lakes.
