IPAs and Porters Go Head to Head on Game Day!

According to sports writers and others in the know, Sunday’s epic rematch is predicted to be the most-watched show in American TV history. It’s also quite possibly going to be the biggest beer-drinking day of the year. No pressure then to pick two styles everyone at your football party might like. It’s not so easy when you love them all, but here are my picks. Go for IPAs (India Pale Ales) and Porters to have on hand when you’ve got a roomful of fans and friends. For a little more game-day rivalry fun, put both out and see which one is the champ of your party.
Admittedly, Pale Ale and the IPA family of beers cover a lot of ground. But the crisp, clean character and sometimes bitter, even citrusy character makes them great for balancing out salty, savory dishes. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy a spicy bowl of chili or some tortilla chips and salsa! For something very approachable, I like ice-cold Saranac Pale Ale or Brooklyn Brewery EIPA (English India Pale Ale). When I’m looking for something with a more “hoppy” character I grab Southern Tier 2X IPA or Sierra Nevada Torpedo.
On the other end of the beer spectrum, you’ve got Porters and Stouts. With their sweeter caramel or even chocolate notes, these beers are perfect with a stew and some great bread! Check out the current issue of Menu magazine for our favorites. If I’m looking for a classic Porter I reach for Samuel Smith’s Taddy. This year I have a new favorite, Southern Tier 2X Milk Stout. This style uses sugars from the lactose in milk. Because the yeast used in the fermentation can’t completely metabolize these sugars, a creamy sweetness is left in the beer. Give the Southern Tier 2X Milk Stout a try. You’ll be in for a treat!
So whether you choose crisp and citrusy or sweet caramel as your game-day beer play (unlike the game’s two elite QBs) you can’t lose! I think I’ll go put mine in the fridge so they are nice and frosty on game day!
What beer will you be serving up at your Game Day party?
