Past, Present, and Future Blog

My colleagues at Wegmans like to point out that I began blogging long before the word (or the Internet) was invented.  My weekly musings first appeared 39 years ago in our newspaper ad.  When I joined Wegmans as “voice of the customer” in late 1971 (after being a consumer educator with Cooperative Extension, first in NJ and then in NY), I was learning a great deal about the supermarket that I realized most consumers didn’t know.  The column was my way to share each week what I was discovering goes on behind the scenes and shelves of our stores.  In total, I’ve written about 2100 columns.

Join the Conversation with Mary Ellen BurrisFast forward to today.  Our newspaper flyer/ad appears only once a month now.  I am still writing a column every week , so even though we don’t have a weekly flyer anymore, you can always find me on wegmans.com.  The change I wanted you to know about is that the column is becoming a blog on wegmans.com.   This will allow me to use pictures or even video to illustrate the topic, and eliminate the need to pare the column length down to 300 words (or thereabouts).   More importantly, it will allow you to easily share your thoughts about what I’ve written …to begin a conversation.   In other words, you can “talk” back.

So how do you find me on wegmans.com if you’re not in the habit of doing so?

  • If you would like to sign up to automatically receive the blog each week, here’s how to do it.
    • If you have a wegmans.com account, go to  wegmans.com/myaccount and select Fresh Stories Blog under Subscription Preferences.
    • If you don’t have a wegmans.com account, don’t worry:  Go to wegmans.com/signup, and create an account, then follow directions above.

Make sense?  If not, tell me so as we communicate in this new way.
P.S.  When our print ad/flyer does appear once a month, my column will still appear there.

  1. Having grown up in the suburbs, I ughobt my first house in the city, loved it..then I moved back to the suburbs because of the school system. Oddly enough, the home I ughobt in the SUBURBS, was a murder house AND we have been robbed since living here. As soon as my boys are out of school, we will be back in the city.I would love it if Rochester built condos that were not so high end. Make it affordable to the middle class(whatever that is nowadays) and I think more people would come downtown. By the way the current issue of the Rochester Magazine shows a scene of Rochester in the 1880s with people ice skating on the canal. There is also a current picture of Ottawas Rideau canal frozen over and filled with people and stands for their Winterlude Festival. There are things we can do..I just don’t know why we don’t do it!

  2. I’m a stay at home mom. I recently have created GroceryOrganizer.com to help people organize their groceries when going shopping. I think it could be helpful to the visitors of your blog.

  3. I am soooo sick of dealing with the Mount Read Store…. I recently moved from Webster to Greece. I have dealt W ALOT of issues inwhich I feel someone at Wegmans management has had plenty of time to deal with. I have been very patient w overcrowding, Weeks of listening to Michael Jackson Music Blarred!, substituding higher price items due to “OUT OF STOCK” issues. Just tonite I had to substitute a differnet haircolor product. due to out of stock issues. Guess What? No substitute! This store has been costing me alot of extra money that I just dont have! If u look at my shoppers club u will see that I WAS a valued customer. I sincerely will go out of my way to NEVER GO NEAR THAT PLACE AGAIN. Why bother?

    • Hi Kathy,

I would like to thank you for not only shopping with us, but for taking the time to let us know how we are doing. Comments from our customers help us make the changes we need to become better at what we do. I sincerely apologize for the unfortunate experiences you had in our Mt. Read store. We are so grateful for the chance to make things right. In order to do that, we have sent a copy of your comments to our store manager (because we believe that concerns such as yours are best resolved by our store employees). A representative from the store will contact you at the email address you provided here. If you do not hear from our store, or you are not satisfied with the response, please let us know.

We know you have many choices when it comes to grocery shopping and we hope you will continue to choose Wegmans for your future grocery needs.

    • Hi Nancy,

Our flyer can be found here. Starting last April, we decreased the frequency of our ad. You can read more about that in this column from Mary Ellen Burris.

Please let us know if there’s anything more we can help with.

  5. MEB’s column in the weekly flyer was always the first thing I would read in the Sunday paper, and I missed it when the flyer stopped being a weekly item. I’m glad that there’s a place to find her writing on the web.

  6. Well I finally figured it out but I must say it is very confusing and hard to find. I think customers will have trouble accessing it. How about creating a “quick link” on the opening page? Thanks!
