Taking You Backstage in Fresh New Ways

At Wegmans, we’re all about finding ways to make great meals easy, healthy, and affordable. A lot goes on behind the scenes to make that happen, and that’s a big part of what we want to share with you through this blog.

Last summer, we took our first steps into blogging with a backstage look at the Wegmans Organic Farm. We got great feedback, and decided it was time to take you behind the scenes at other spots around Wegmans. You’ll be able to get the inside scoop from Wegmans people, and connect with us through our blog.

The big thing is that this blog is for you. So, we’d love to hear what you’d like us to share. So join in and let us know what you’ve been wondering about.

We hope you’ll have fun exploring with us!

  1. I am absolutely shocked to know a company like Wegmans purchases from Tyson. That name alone taints Wegmans credibility. I wholeheartedly concur with all the previously mentioned concerns. I’ve heard Danny is a proponent of Michael Pollan’s book “In Defense of Food”. Michael Pollan is the pre-eminent voice on the aforementioned documentary: Food, Inc. What is disclosed and shown via footage at their ‘farms’ and processing plants is an absolute disgrace to the food industry, and should have no association with a company like Wegmans. Again, absolutely stunned at this revelation. The buyers need to look further, much further. Here’s some titles: Food Matters, Food, Inc., The Future of Food. Some of THE best and most credible documentary work I’ve seen. I truly hope you’re listening to the cumulative ‘voice’ here…Tyson is a black mark to your name.

  2. I shop at Wegmans almost daily. I am thrilled to see how Wegmans store in Allentown is constantly evoloving , improving and incorporating new concepts and idea such as $6. meal deal. Keep up with the great work.
I have one suggestion for the Allentown location. That relates to the delays in getting served at the Pizza stand. The reason is customers pick up food from other nearby stands and pay for them at the pizza counter. Twice my grand daughter and I have had to wait 5 to 10 minutes to get served since the server was busy at the cash register with customers that were not buying from the pizza stand. Please see if you can do something about this. Thanks again.

    • Hey Shahri- It’s so nice to hear you enjoy our $6 meals and pizza! Thanks so much for your feedback. We apologize for your wait at the pizza shop. We’ll pass along your comment to the Allentown Pizza Shop for you.

  3. I love Wegmans very convenient to shop there 1 issue I have is due to my celiac disease I need to buy gluten free and the brand that Wegmans carry is just not good enough, there is some exciting new items in the local stores like the Katz brand which has soft bread and great dessert and other companies we look forward for a change in this section

Mrs Fisher commented on September 16, 2010.
    • Hi Mrs Fisher- As a destination for the celiac/GF community we are constantly striving to be “evergreen” with the best products, information, and services – that are best in class. Feedback such as this is very helpful in identifying potential additions to our product selection. The recent addition of Udi’s bake goods, is a good/recent example of consumer feedback and interest that helped with the introduction of the line. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

  4. I was in the Woodbridge New Jersey store recently when I saw an employee restocking the Wegmans boneless chicken breast. I was horrified to see that the boxes said Tyson on them.

If you have ever watched the documentary “Food Inc.” you would never, EVER, by anything made by Tyson.

I have been skeptical for quite some time now on the quality of Wegmans meat and fish and this just sealed the deal. Shame on you!

DON’T BUY WEGMANS CHICKEN OR BEEF!!!!!! Unless, of course, you don’t mind eating a sickly chicken or cow!

Mary commented on August 24, 2010.
    • Hi Mary- Although we can’t speak to the impression left by the documentary you mention, we can tell you that we make it our business to know our suppliers well. Our merchants make regular visit to plants and other facilities that supply products to us. In addition, Wegmans quality assurance auditors inspect every facility that produces for our label before they approved to do so. We have everything to lose and nothing to gain by partnering with suppliers that don’t meet our standards for quality, food safety, and animal welfare. You may not change your mind, but we wanted you to know that we are listening.

  5. Just wanted to let you know that I used to love your stores. They are a great disappointment now…Lack of brand variety, you want to shove your own “brand” down peoples throats.. You are going after every small business in your market areas and destroying family livlihoods..examples.,.
small flower shops, pizza sub shops, formerly photo shops, chinese restaurants and now liquor stores..ENOUGH IS ENOUGH..Why do you have to hurt others to make yourselves more money.. I know many of these lines are loss leaders for you and you do not care about profiting on them. Think about your former customers who you have hurt ….

SOmething to think about. Don’t be so greedy!!!

    • I totally agree with you! Don’t buy the Wegmans chicken either! It’s really Tyson; the most contaminated poultry out there!

Mary commented on August 24, 2010.
    • Did you ever stop to look at the Wegmans brand compared to the “national” brands? Especially the prices. Wegmans are almost ALWAYS lower (unless it’s at a higher quality with higher quality, more expensive ingredients like truffles!) with at least the same quality. And Wegmans will make a profit off of whatever brand they’re selling and you’re buying so quit complaining about it if they try to save you some money! A perfect example is their 12 packs of soda currently on sale for 5 cases for $10 while Pepsi is on sale for 3 cases for $12. You’re getting LESS for MORE with the Pepsi brand but if you want to waste your money then go for it!
And they’re offering you convenience by offering you subs (which FYI, have been around for YEARS now, it’s not like it’s a new thing to be upset about), pizza, and chinese in one spot. If someone is REALLY craving their favorite chinese, then they’ll drive to the restaurant and get it. But if they’re so-so about it and get it from wegmans because it’s there, chances are they weren’t going to drive to the chinese restaurant to get chinese anyways. And if you don’t want buy chinese or subs or pizza from wegmans then don’t!
And lastly, if Wegmans were ONLY in it for themselves and not to community, they wouldn’t do so much for local charities, give so much food to local food banks and they wouldn’t bother to get their produce from local farmers!

  6. Fantastic blog! It’s great to have a place to check out the latest happenings at Wegmans. I am from Pittsburgh and come to Chautauqua, NY in the summer time. I recently found an incredible product at the Jamestown Wegman’s store that I had never seen before – Borsari seasonings! These artisan seasoning salts are perfect for just about any type of food that needs a delicious gourmet flavour (maybe except desert). I am going to have to stock up on all three varieties before I go home at the end of August. Great job Wegmans on finding such a unique, and most importantly delicious product!

  8. I have just moved to Florida from Pennsylvania. The thing that I miss most is my Wegman. You really need to put your stores in the south. Wegmans would put the other grocery stores to shame. They can not compare with Wegmans. Going grocery shopping was always a pleasure. Now it seems like work. I have only been in Florida for 3 weeks. Please think about putting your stores in Florida. Thank you for your time and thank you for the wonderful shopping I had in Erie, Pennsylvania. Denise A. Boyles

  9. Well has anyone tried Wegman’s brank Albacore Tuna! I wish I hadn’t – I now have to pack my husbands lunch! It’s the best tuna around, ask my husband. I made the error of purchasing Bumble bee after making Wegmans for him and he noticed the difference and called me right away from work. Just for fun I purchased three different types of tuna and Wegman’s Albacore (in the light blue can and sooooo reasonably priced) I opened all the cans together – you could see the difference. Wegmans is solid, large pieces of the most beautiful white tuna while the others looked like it had been chewed and spit out, isn’t that a pleasan picture in your mind. Wegman’s mayo a little fresh cracked pepper, some vidalia onion and celery hearts and voila the perfect tuna salad. Darn you Wegman’s I now have to pack my husbands lunch. Do I thank you? Yes I guess I do because the kids love it too.

  10. Hi Mary Ann. I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you. But I found your answer. Although we won’t be selling wine in the store, there will be a separate wine and spirits shop close by, operated by an independent owner. As for the organic farm, currently we have no plans for cooking classes at the farm. We don’t have kitchen facilities at the farm for this use. However, some of our stores offer cooking classes. Check our our events page for more info.

  11. Love love love the Lemon vinagrette. It runs out in our Gainesville store too but I think they started ordering more after I pointed it out and literally had 5 or 6 Wegmans employees trying to find it for me! Such great service.

  12. I have to say, after visiting MANY different stores all over a few states, Wegmans is the best and most well equipped for special dietary needs, as well as fresh and wholesome foods. I dont think I could move to a state that does not have a Wegmans! I love your store, and prices I feel are the best.

  13. Wegman’s is like taking a little trip to Tuscany! My husband s from Pittsford NY. For 20 years I’ve been hoping and waiting to live close to one of your stores. Finally you are coming to Bel Air, MD. Thank you! Thank you! I would love to be your first employee. Specifically, I’d like to work the catering desk. I want to be the liason between your great food and all the parties out there. What’s the best way to make this dream a reality?

Sue Celuch commented on July 17, 2010.
    • That’s so sweet Sue. We’ll be looking for great employees with your enthusiasm. We won’t be opening until 2012, so it’s too soon to apply. We will get the word out when applications are being accepted for this location.
